Abstract

A simple algebraic form for the dipole operator which allows for overtone transitions is introduced and discussed. The proposed operator has the flexibility to reproduce the known qualitative features of the Einstein coefficients for anharmonic molecules. It can also be used to quantitatively account for intensities and the lineshape function for HF at 1000 K is computed as an example.
