Abstract

The electric dipole moments of some simple sulphinic acid esters have been measured in benzene. Conformations have been determined by a graphical method. The approximate conformation of the functional group is gauche as is supposed for the conformation of free sulphinic acid. These results can be explained on the assumption that one of the free electron pairs on oxygen is localized in an essentially unhybridized p orbital. The group refraction increment 10·02 cm.3 for –SO·O– was determined.
