Abstract
Pharyngeal topical anesthesia is widely used during transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Although generally regarded as safe, topical anesthetic administration has been shown to have various complications, mostly reported during endoscopy and bronchoscopy procedures but also during TEE. Topical anesthesia can be complicated by toxic methemoglobinemia1-3 and, when absorbed systemically, can result in severe, life-threatening systemic toxicity.4,5 Hypersensitivity reactions are rare and are usually attributed to preservatives and anesthetic components in the preparation.
