Abstract

Diphyscium foliosum (Hedw.) Mohr is apparently rare in Mississippi. Extensive collecting by Edwards (1973), Stewart (1975), and others has failed to find this species in Mississippi. It occurs in Louisiana (Reese 1972), and in Alabama it is not uncommon in the northern part of the state, but is not found south of the central portion of the state (Wilkes 1965). The nearest location mentioned by Wilkes is Lamar County, Alabama, which is at least 125 air miles from the Pearl River location in Mississippi reported here. The area along the Pearl River is primarily an oak-hickory forest with cypress-gum in low areas. Diphyscium foliosum was found April 20, 1979, on the west side of the river in a small wash area that emptied into the Pearl River just south of Ratliff Ferry Road on the Ross Barnett Reservoir. The wash sloped steeply into the river on an outer bend of the main channel of the river. Restricted to less than a square meter, D. foliosum was mixed with Atrichum undulatum (Hedw.) Beauv. on sandy alluvial soil. MISSISSIPPI. MADISON CO.: Ross Barnett Reservoir, S. of Ratliff Ferry Road, W. side of Pearl River, Sec. 25, Bryson 2470 (IBE, duplicates to be distributed).
