Diogenes Syndrome: Social Breakdown of the Elderly

Abstract

Objective: Diogenes syndrome is characterized by extreme self-neglect, domestic squalor and hoarding of rubbish (syllogomania). This syndrome has been reported since 1975 and is prevalent in the elderly. It affects all socioeconomic status, occupations and genders. Many patients are suspicious, withdrawn and lack of insight. Psychiatric disorders (schizophrenia, affective disorder or dementia) and preexisting physical illness may be comorbid but are not universal. It is common but usually underdiagnosed. Here we present a 71-year-old female elderly patient with Diogenes syndrome and discuss related issues.
