Abstract
The diocotron instability influence on the value of average electron density in a discharge with crossed electric and magnetic fields has been studied in magnetron and inverted magnetron geometries. The obtained results is in agreement with experimental data. It is found that in magnetron with a thin cathode the mode l=1 is unstable in a narrow interval of electron densities. The width of this interval vanishes when the cathode radius tends to zero.
