Abstract
Proteins containing dinuclear non-heme iron centers have been characterized that catalyse reversible binding of O 2, hydroxylation of alkanes, and oxidation of tyrosine to a tyrosyl radical. Physical biochemical methods have revealed novel aspects of both the structure and function of these proteins. Characterization of these centers has been greatly assisted by structural and functional bioinorganic models.
