Abstract

For some male dinosaurs, the way to a female's heart may have been a shoveling contest. Raised earth ridges flanked by parallel troughs, discovered in Colorado, are the first physical evidence that dinosaurs competed in attention--grabbing displays to woo mates. Dating back around 100 million years, the structures are sometimes accompanied by three-toed footprints, suggesting that they were made by a species of theropod--the group that included velociraptors and the ancestors of birds
