Abstract
Among eucalypt leaf beetles, Metaxyonycha angusta is a very important pest because it causes losses to the wood production in the Brazilian eucalypt plantations. This work deals to the morphologic character which allow sex determination in that insect specie. External morphologic characteristics, such as urosternite shapes and body measurements, were examined from 50 insects of each sex. Sex determination may be found out through examining the fifth urosternite. In males, there is a small clipping at the posterior edge of the fifth urosternite. Females have the posterior edge of that segment presenting a deeper notch

Summary
Insetos adultos de M. angusta foram coletados no município de Andrêlandia, Estado de Minas Gerais, em dezembro de 2002. A avaliação das características morfológicas externas foi realizada em 50 adultos de cada sexo, sob uma lupa estereoscópica (40 X). Procuraram-se identificar características morfológicas externas para diferenciar os sexos dos indivíduos dessa espécie, tais como a forma dos uroesternitos (Salt, 1928) e das antenas (Bartlet et al, 1999), presença de esporão na mesotíbia (Silveira et al, 2000) e dimensões corporais (Fox et al, 2003). Utilizando-se a mesma lupa anterior, porém, equipada com ocular micrométrica com precisão de 0,02 mm, e régua milimétrica com precisão de 0,5 mm, mediram-se o comprimento, pela distância entre a extremidade anterior da cabeça e a posterior dos élitros, e a largura, pela maior distância entre os lados do corpo (Anjos, 1992). As médias do comprimento e de largura foram comparadas pelo teste de F, ao nível de 5% de probabilidade
