Abstract

Cs 3Cr 2I 9 belongs to a novel class of singlet ground-state systems; the extended dimerized spin systems. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed on powder samples at 8 K. The singlet-triplet dimer transition is clearly visible at 0.5 meV. The powder spectrum was calculated from the dispersion relation. The calculation indicates that a J-value (singlet- triplet separation) of −0.79 meV, which was obtained from other experiments, reproduces the experimental powder spectrum. The hot triplet-quintet transition is identified around 1.5 meV.
