Abstract

The causes of forest depletion in the Himalayan region are complex, and they vary from one local setting to another, as the result of long historical trends. This paper traces three major factors: the intrusion of modern political and economic systems into the mountains; the growth of modern resource management agencies, notably the Indian Forest Service; and the pressures of rural subsistence and population migrations.
