Abstract
A Schlieren system was established to observe the dimension of stem channel near the high-voltage electrode under positive switching impulses. Stems with two different shapes after the first streamer corona were distinguished from the Sclieren images, i.e., the cylinder-shaped one and the frustum-shaped one. The thermal radius and axial length were measured for both types of stems. The measurements were compared with that used in the simulaiton of leader initiation. Moreover, more experiments were carried out under different conditions (voltage rising rate and curvature radius of electrode). The results show that the curvature radius of electrode has a great influence on the type and dimension of a stem.
