ABSTRACT Three Alcott sensational thrillers were published as dime novels by Elliott, Thomes and Talbot of Boston: V. V: or, Plots and Counterplots by “A. M. Barnard” (c. 1870), Ten Cent Novelettes #80; The Skeleton in the Closet by L. M. Alcott (1867), Ten Cent Novelettes #49; The Mysterious Key, and What It Opened by L. M. Alcott (1867), Ten Cent Novelettes #50. Their characters, plots, technique, and autobiographical sources are analyzed; Alcott's skill in the sensational genre is discussed, with comments on a full-length Alcott sensational novel, A Long, Fatal Love Chase, rejected in 1866 and first published in 1995.
