Abstract
The relation between the effective stress ratio sigma (sub 1)/sigma (sub 3), and the dilatancy of sand was found experimentally from test results where the sample was subjected to a general stress varying the effective stresses sigma (sub 1), sigma (sub 2) and sigma (sub 3) in different ways. Theoretical study and the experimental results showed that the stress ratio up to its maximum value was a linear function of the dilatancy regardless of the porosity. Also, the slope of this linear relation was found to be dependent on the ratio of two of the effective principal stresses. The experimental results as well as previous results of other researchers showed that the maximum dilatancy of sands is independent of the effective intermediate principal stress. Hence, relations between the maximum effective stress sigma (sub 1)/sigma (sub 3), the maximum dilatancy and the relative porosity for different sands are postulated. (Author/TRRL)
