Abstract

AbstractThe extensive use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), particularly after the advent of the Internet, transforms the world economy and every aspect of life in a severe way. The so-called “digitization” process poses a question, as well as a dilemma concerning the potential opportunities to alleviate poverty. Within this context, this work examines the concepts of “poverty,” “digitization,” and “digital divide” and shapes the notion of “digital poverty.” The impact of digitization on economic growth is examined, indicating that there is a multidimensional effect upon the economy and also raising concerns about widening the gap among groups of people and countries. The paper focuses on the European Union (EU) countries, analyzing data derived from the World Economic Forum (WEF). The latest Networked Readiness Index (NRI) values of eight selected countries are analyzed. The findings confirm a different level of impact on these countries, significantly related to infrastructure and skills.KeywordsPovertyICTDigitizationDigital divideDigital povertyEconomic impactNetworked Readiness Index
