Abstract

TDM switching, after the early PAM work, finally found its realisation through PCM. The change of technology over the past 10-15 years has accelerated the conversion of networks at an ever increasing pace. Digital switching, having been based on voice requirements during its initial phases, is now meeting the requirements of ISDN. However, life never stands still! No sooner have networks become established based on 64 kbit/s fixed channels, than the transmission engineers have begun to develop systems with greater flexibility of bandwidth. The switching of these variable-bandwidth signals is considered in Chapter 15. Consequently, the fixed TDM switching of the last decade must be viewed as just another stage in network evolution.
