Digital television exciter and receiver for satellite news gathering: digital satellite link performance

Abstract

The move toward digital transmission of television signals presents new opportunities and advantages to broadcasters when compared with today's analog links. This is particularly evident in the transmission of television signals by satellite, where the application of digital technology will have a positive impact through greater utilization of transponder resources, lower operating costs, and improved link performance. A new digital television exciter and studio-grade receiver built specifically for the satellite news gathering (SNG) environment have been developed and are discussed in the paper.
