Abstract

Digital health technologies are solutions that use digital technology to improve health and healthcare delivery, including the prevention and control of NCDs. Although digital technologies have been used in healthcare for decades, recent advances in network connectivity, cloud computing, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence have dramatically increased the potential efficacy and ability to scale up their adoption and implementation. This chapter describes how digital technologies can be used to strengthen the delivery of healthcare for NCDs (e.g. improving access to healthcare, reducing inefficiencies in the healthcare system, improving the quality of care, lowering the cost of healthcare, enabling patient empowerment and education and providing more personalized health care for patients) and the role of digital technologies in improving health promotion, health literacy and patient empowerment. The chapter also describes issues around implementation, including costs and benefits, interoperability, infrastructure, regulatory challenges (including patient safety and data privacy) and resilience and safety of health systems.
