Abstract

Social justice is a thread that is woven into the values of librarians. Concepts such as equal access, diversity, and inclusion are central tenets of librarianship. The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) competencies (2009) strengthen the social justice fabric of the profession. In the Art of Storytelling, eighteen graduate students used digital tools to create and disseminate advocacy stories. A content analysis of the ALSC competencies and graduate students’ data shows that, although the term “social justice” is not used in those competencies, these professional standards provide support for aligning preservice education with concepts related to social justice.
