Abstract

In the near future, computer-driven multimedia presentations will replace traditional 35 mm slide carousels as the preferred method of giving a scientific presentation or teaching course at the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) meetings. Many individuals have already adopted this approach quite successfully for their presentations and consistently receive the highest level of audience approval. Digital presentations and course materials on CD-ROM or Digital Video Disk may be useful for future reference or learning about surgical techniques that have been presented during annual meetings or symposia. For those of you who will be submitting an abstract to the ASAPS Scientific Program Committee for selection, it is not too late to start thinking about presenting your material in an electronic format. The whole process is really quite similar to developing a presentation with 35 mm slides, except that you are working in a format that offers state-of-the-art advantages over traditional methods. Multiple forms of media may coexist within a presentation. Presentation graphics offer endless combinations of format, design, color palette, digital images, video, and audio. Additionally, animation effects help you to accommodate most individuals' styles of learning and to maintain audience attention. Unfortunately, all of this electronic firepower will not salvage a second-rate presentation. It is important to focus your presentation with respect to goals and content just as you would if you were using traditional slides. Avoid the temptation to expand the number of slides or add distracting special effects that do not enhance the message that you want to deliver.
