Abstract

Cultural heritage is being recognized throughout the world as an important aspect for exploring and understanding the socio-economic background of any nation. Many steps have been undertaken throughout the world at different levels for carrying research in this area. Preservation of cultural heritage is deemed of utmost importance for tracing the evolution of different civilizations and preserving the same for linking the present with rich past. Arts and Crafts are one such important category of cultural heritage items and provide valuable information about the life style of any nation. This study is an attempt towards identification and preservation of famous woodcraft art of Kashmir (India). With influence of modern art and rapid socio-economic changes, woodcraft art is gradually declining throughout the valley. Thus, the knowledge about such crafts needs to be documented and provide access to in a more organised manner in order to preserve cultural richness for future generations. The Survey method is used for identification of different woodcraft items of historical importance. Digital images, description and relevant historical information pertaining to each artifact was collected and included in the collection. Various primary and secondary information sources were consulted to complete the information gaps including books, internet resources, people associated with such traditions crafts.
