Abstract

Over the last decade, previous research has drawn attention primarily to digital platforms in the consumer sector, yet ignoring the specificities of industrial settings. Hence, we expect these research findings on digital platforms are not easily transferable to Industrial Internet-of-Things Platforms (IIoTP). We address our research towards IIoTP by (1) identifying and describing which IIoTP types exist, (2) explaining how value creation logics are applied on different IIoTPs types, and (3) elaborating how IIoTP types can be classified with respect to value creation. We identify four IIoTP types, namely Digital Marketplace, Connectivity Platform, Hyperscaler, and Integrated IIoTP. Additionally, we find that specific value creation logics are applied differently on IIoTP types. We enrich literature with a comprehensive IIoTP classification framework and provide managers with a basis for deciding whether to invest in building an IIoTP and, if so, what efforts to make and what focus to place.
