Abstract
ABSTRACTHow do violent world events motivate online news-seeking? And are dynamics similar across national publics? For answers, I unobtrusively measured four years of U.S. and Pakistani Internet searches about drone strikes merged with data on strikes, news coverage, and related events. Results show news-seeking in both countries rises after strikes kill top militant leaders and after major drone-related events. News coverage responds similarly to events, and news independently mobilizes searches. Thus, news-seeking in both countries jointly reflects audience interests and news agenda-setting dynamics. Methodologically, Google Trends provides innovative means to study online news-seeking with unobtrusive, cross-national measures complementing other methods.
