Abstract

With the fast development of new technologies in the domain of ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems), it is a challenge how to pave a suitable way to high-level automated road transport for further enhancing road safety, traffic efficiency, and energy efficiency, environmental friendliness and comfort of road transport. The challenges concern multiple aspects, not only technology, but also legal, human factors, future mobility and business. This chapter focuses on the role of ICT (Information and Communications Technology) infrastructure for cooperative and automated driving. Taking into account traffic management of the transport system as a whole (and not merely from the perspective of vehicles), and targeting mature V2X (Vehicle to everything) communication technologies and their applications for future connected road transport. The chapter reviews recent research and innovation results from three selected projects (MAVEN, TransAID and C-MobILE), funded by the European Union under Horizon 2020 Framework Programme. Approaches, main outcomes and key findings are presented. In addition, the way forward towards infrastructure supported high-level automated road transport, including sophisticated traffic management and signal control in urban areas, is discussed.
