Abstract

The United States Military (Army, Navy and Air Force) has been active in Picture Archiving and Communications (PACS) for over ten years. Early work includes three teleradiology studies and a full scale prototype PACS implementation at two civilian universities. An Educational PACS and Computer Aided Instructional (CAI) programs have been developed by the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) to support Gross Anatomy, Neuroanatomy, Pathology and Radiology training of military medical students. Current activities include PACS implementation into military hospitals and clinics under the Medical Diagnostic Imaging Support Systems (MDIS) program and developing additional digital image based CAI programs to supplement first year (GME-2) medical, surgical and radiology residency training. Future plans include implementation of PACS in all military treatment facilities, operational units and combat medical support units.
