Abstract

This chapter continues the development of Simulink models for coherent modulations including multi‐phase PSK (MPSK) and quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Simulink models for computing the QAM bit error rate (BER) performance in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) are developed. An important choice in simulating the QAM BER performance is whether the performance is obtained for peak or average power. Peak power is often an important consideration when the power must be constrained to stay within the power amplifier (PA) limits to avoid saturation. In satellite applications, the PA is implemented as a traveling‐wave tube (TWT) or a solid state power amplifier (SSPA) and is ordinarily operated in its linear region by ensuring that the peak power is well below the nonlinear PA saturation point. The use of the bertool was applied extensively in the BER computations.
