Evidence that the way brightness and chromatic information are processed by the human visual system is relevant to the field of image processing is presented. A three-dimensional homomorphic model for human color vision is outlined. Applications of this model to color image enhancement, transmission, coding, and to the definition of a distortion measure between such images are shown.
