Abstract
Over the last fifteen years, a wide variety of visual communication systems have been introduced. Currently full motion video-conferencing is the most demanding service. Such services offer transmission rates of 1.5 or 2Mb/s. A strong trend towards lower bit rates in the range of 56–384 kb/s is emerging.
