Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of the problems involved in archiving medical images on digital media and focuses on their solutions using optical disk technology. The context is a Medical Imaging Department in which there exist several digital imaging modalities, such as CT scanner, Magnetic Resonance Imaging or Digital Angiography. The emphasis is on these currently digital systems, rather than on an all-digital situation in which every modality, including conventional radiography would have been transformed to a digital format. To begin with we will discuss some of the issues involved and the technologies that may be applicable. Next, various elements on the solutions offered by Digital Optical Disks will be given. Finally, some of the alternatives are discussed briefly.
