Abstract
Psychosocial interventions are an important adjunct to pharmacotherapies in the maintenance treatment of people with schizophrenia. In the pharmacological maintenance trials, when patients are switched to placebo after responding to acute phase treatment, up to 60% relapse within a year; on maintenance antipsychotics, this proportion is 24%, without important differences among the drugs.1,2 In other words, one in four patients with schizophrenia might still relapse under well-supervised maintenance pharmacotherapy within a year.
