Abstract 1. 1. The foregut contents were acidic while the remaining parts of the guts had neutral contents. 2. 2. The caeca were the major sources of various different digestive enzymes. 3. 3. Various properties of amylase including pH optimum, temperature effect, high temperature and mercuric chloride inhibition were studied. 4. 4. The caecal tissue produced the largest amount of amylase while the lumen of the anterior hindgut contained the largest quantity. 5. 5. There was a significant drop of amylase activity in the gut after 5 days' starvation.
