Abstract

How has the evolution of segment size patterning been developmentally regulated and what does the trilobite fossil record tell us about these ancestral control mechanisms? Nikolic et al. (2023) relate the evolutionary and developmental mechanisms of segmentation in extinct trilobites to those seen in extant arthropods and vertebrates to examine how ontogenic renovations are echoed in the phylogeny of segmental patterning.
