Abstract

The effect of light-induced diffusion pulling (LDP) into the light beam of particles resonantly absorbing radiation, which had been theoretically predicted, was observed using Na vapor. The Na vapor, being in the buffer gas (He) atmosphere, was excited with cw dye laser radiation. The relative variation of the diffusion coefficient when ground-state Na becomes excited was measured: 0.12±0.03.
