Abstract

The diffusion of uranium in polyethylene was studied by counting induced fission tracks of the diffused uranium atoms irradiated in a thermal reactor with thermal neutrons. Diffusions through 0.05 to 0.15 cm thickness of polyethylene sheets of temperatures from 87.5° to 110°C have been investigated. The diffusion coefficient for each temperature was obtained from the slope of the logarithmic plot of the fission track densities versus the square of the thickness of the diffusion medium. The temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficient in this temperature range was obtained as D = 3.4 exp (−15000/ RT).
