Abstract

The diffusion of hydrogen in the α-phase of Pd-H has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering. It is concluded that the method when used to its full power should be able to reveal all the details of the interstitial diffusion process. The results obtained in the present study are in reasonable agreement with results obtained by other methods. It is shown that the diffusion occurs through jumps between adjacent octahedral interstitial sites. The observed variation of the residence time with temperature yields the value (3700 ± 500) cal/g. atom for the activation energy.
