Abstract

The problem of describing the smoothing out and diffusion of an initial velocity discontinuity is solved analytically by means of the linearized Bhatnager, Gross and Krook model of the Boltzmann equation. The solution is compared with previous approximate solutions and with the solution arising from a continuum treatment based on Navier-Stokes equations.
