Abstract

We propose a new method of boriding, in which the atomization of boron from boron-containing compounds and the diffusion of boron into the surface layer of steel occur under the influence of friction. The idea of the method is based on a quantum-chemical analysis of the interaction of boron atoms with the surface of iron grains and the known experimental data on the diffusion of elements during frictional contact of two bodies. The main result of the application of this method is expected to be saturation of iron grain boundaries with boron atoms without formation of iron borides.
