Abstract

A method of obtaining very precise data on the solubility and diffusion of hydrogen in single crystals of metals is described. Results for the permeability, solubility, and diffusivity of hydrogen in pure nickel and a nickel −4.4 at. % vanadium alloy are presented. For pure nickel the diffusion coefficient is D=(5.22±0.18)×10−3exp [−(9.56±0.04) kcal/RT] cm2sec−1 and the solubility in atom fraction H/Ni is S=(3.26±0.17)×10−3exp[−(3.60±0.06) kcal/RT]. The nickel—vanadium alloy is more permeable to hydrogen because of a lower heat of solution of hydrogen (2.09±0.05 kcal/mole) in the alloy.
