Abstract

The technique of diffuse reflectance laser flash photolysis is discussed and examples are given of time resolved spectra showing laser induced changes in diffuse reflectance and of transient decays as a function of time on timescales as short as a few picoseconds. Methods for extracting transient spectra and decay kinetics from raw experimental data are outlined. The application of the technique to the study of various heterogeneous systems including photochemical processes, within organic and inorganic microcrystals, within functionalised polymers and ion exchange resins, and to the laser photolysis of adsorbed species at interfaces and within zeolites are presented.
