Abstract

Question: A 67-year-old woman was hospitalized for treatment of IgG kappa-type multiple myeloma diagnosed about 2 months before admission. She had mild anemia and thrombocytopenia (red blood cell count, 3.44 × 106 /μL; hemoglobin, 10.1 g/dL; hematocrit, 31.2%; platelets, 12.4 × 104 /μL). Owing to the presence of kappa-type multiple myeloma IgG antibodies, serum concentrations of IgG (434 mg/dL; reference range, 861–1747 mg/dL), IgA (26 mg/dL; reference range, 93–393 mg/dL), IgM (15 mg/dL; reference range, 50–269 mg/dL) and total protein (4.8 g/dL; reference range, 6.6–8.1 g/dL) were decreased.
