Abstract

Regional differences of fertility in Italy since 1950. At the present time Italy is showing up a striking decline of fertility, with deep and persistent regional differentiations. Thus we tried to grasp the factors which are laying on the base of a different tendency to procreate by means of some statistical instruments (such as simple and multiple correlations, principal-component analysis). We took into account both indicators of socio-economical and of cultural order, trying to find out which part of the differences of fertility could be imputed to «material» aspects by one side and to men- tality by the other. An extremely significant situation has stood out: in the North and Centre, cultural factors - rather than the socio-economical ones - are affecting the reproductive behaviour, while in the South both orders of factors don't seem to be influential at all.
