Abstract

Using a strong-coupling multiperipheral model, we calculate the diffractive component of the slope of the elastic differential cross sections for vector meson-proton scattering. The relative flatness of these slopes is explained by the vector particles decomposing into spinless mesons. The variations in slope among the vector mesons is explained by the differences in the pseudoscalar-meson masses. Good qualitative agreement with experiment is obtained.
