Abstract

The diffraction coefficient in some areas of the geometric shadow behind a detached breakwater or a breakwater gap proves to be markedly greater for random wind-generated waves than for periodic waves. The cause becomes clear in the light of the general theory of three-dimensional wave groups, which shows how some exceptionally large wave heights can occur in the geometric shadow.
