Abstract

AbstractThe diagnosis of a viral infection is often based on first intention on a serodiagnosis with detection of specific IgM. However, The interpretation of the IgM result should take into account the risk of false negativity. These false negative results are mainly linked to a lack of sensitivity of the test or to a test carried out too early, as well as the risk of false positivity resulting mainly from serological cross-reactivity, polyclonal stimulation of B lymphocytes, prolonged persistence of IgM after primary infection or from autoantibody interference. The result of a serodiagnosis based on the detection of specific IgM should therefore be interpreted with caution and additional serological of virological tests may be necessary to confirm the diagnosis.
