Abstract

The French Confederation Generale du Travail (CGT) claims to be exceptional within French and European trade unionism. At a time of redefinition of the tasks and the responsibilities of the unions, there can be no doubt in the mind of this leader, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the French Communist Party, that the CGT is exceptional when it comes to union independence. The proportion of communists in the CGT is growing, but the number of CGT members in the Parti Communiste FranOais is shrinking, as it is throughout the working population. Having examined the extent of the weakening of its influence in French society, which itself has problems with its traditional patterns of representation, the chapter examines the institutional answers that are being given to what appears to be a serious crisis of identity.
