Abstract

Explants of 14-day rat foetal tongue were grown in organ culture for periods up to 6 days. Filiform papillae similar to those that develop in vivo developed in the cultures. It is concluded that development of these complex structures can occur in the absence of nervous or vascular influences and is probably dependent on interaction between epithelium and mesenchyme.
