Abstract

A parallel pattern of appearance of (i) divalent cation regulation of excitation energy distribution, (ii) low affinity divalent cation binding sites, and (iii) synthesis of a light-harvesting chlorophyll a b protein were observed in greening chloroplast membranes. It is suggested that the pigment-protein complex possesses binding sites for cations. Cation binding to these sites may be involved in the primary process regulating excitation energy distribution between photosystems I and II.
