Abstract

The high-pressure phase behaviour of the liquid crystals 4- n-hexyloxy- and 4- n-decyloxy-4'-cyanobiphenyl (60CB and 10OCB) has been studied pure as well as saturated with some gases or gas mixtures (helium, nitrogen, argon, Ar/CO 2 mixtures) at pressures up to 270 MPa with a high-pressure DTA apparatus. Pure 60CB shows a nematic phase, whereas 100CB exhibits a smetic phase as well as an additional pressure-induced nematic phase above 35 MPa. The nematic and the smectic phases are destabilized under the influence of the gases mentioned above; in particular within the experimental pressure range the pressure-induced nematic phase of pure 10OCB is no longer observed under the influence of the gases and gas mixtures mentioned above with the exception of helium.
