Abstract

Ribbons of Co-P with a transverse structural modulation in phosphorus content were produced by electrolytic deposition at pulsed current density. The composition modulation was evidenced by relating electron diffraction spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry. In particular it was shown that the latter technique can resolve the presence of regions containing a high P atomic fraction from regions of low P content. A very high amplitude of magneto elastic waves was obtained in this type of Co-P ribbons. This result was explained in terms of the mixed non-magnetic and magnetic layer structure which was produced by compositional variations. The significant magnetoelastic properties show that the investigated material could be useful as piezomagnetic core in ultrasonic technology and radioelectronics.
