Abstract
Bending and launching conditions that a polarization-maintaining graded-index plastic optical ber (PMGIPOF) operates with its greatest extinction ratio (ER) were studied using a setup that measures ER for selective modes. Quantitative values of birefringence at the core local points were measured by polarized optical microscopy with a Berek compensator. Local birefringence and the photoelastic effect were confirmed to affect ER differently manner with regard to the launching conditions.
